What is Chiropractic Medicine?

Founded in the 1890's by D.D. Palmer and brought into the 20th Century by his son B.J. Palmer, chiropractic medicine is an approach to health care that uses spinal manipulation to relieve pain.  Although it is most often used for back or neck pain, spinal manipulation can affect the overall health of the body and it's innate ability to heal itself.  Most chiropractors take a natural approach to promoting health through lifestyle changes, nutrition, and exercise.  Many chiropractors also have extra training in physical rehabilitation, exercise therapy, nutritional analysis, and herbal supplement therapy.

Chiropractic treatments usually involve spinal manipulation which is a treatment that uses pressure on a joint of the spine. It is also called spinal adjustment. It is used to improve pain and function. Manipulation can be done with the hands or a special device called an activator. The careful, controlled force used on the joint can range from gentle to strong, and from slow to rapid. Sometimes other joints of the body are also worked on to help treat the spine.  A visit to the chiropractor results in relief for many people.

The goal of chiropractic treatment is to increase movement in the joint, relax the muscles, and assist the body in healing.   X-rays of the spine are used to help diagnose conditions.
