Five Lessons Learned from the Women in My Life

Five Lessons Learned from the Women in My Life

    by Dr. Theresa Pigott, DC

    BE DEDICATED

Most women are dedicated to something or someone in their life: their man, their children, their job or profession; selflessly giving, nurturing, and taking care of others. The secret to this lesson is you must love what you are doing or else it becomes a burden, a chore, and no fun.  My aunt, Sr. Theresa Martin, is 85 years old and has dedicated 69 of those years in religious life as an Adrian Dominican Sister, without complaint and totally committed to her calling. Her life has been an example of dedication, loyalty, and devotion. She taught me that when you dedicate yourself to something “bigger” than yourself, you can find a deep sense of peace and joy in the process.

    LOVE DEEPLY

Grammy, as I referred to her, showered upon me the most incredible feeling of unconditional love ever.  It wasn’t just the average, ordinary love, but she went beyond and made everyone feel loved as they were, no matter what.  She was always willing to lend her ear as you lazily sat and sipped hot tea (out of those delicate tea cups and saucers) and ate her homemade Irish soda bread.  This love would be the standard upon which I would strive for, to bestow upon others.

    PRAY

If I heard it once, I heard it 1000 times:  “you study, and I’ll pray”, from Mary, my mother, who had an unwavering faith in God.  This unshakable belief and knowing that her prayers would be answered, serve as a guide in my life to this day.  Since I’ve had lots of exams in my lifetime (and did pretty well), it proves over and over the power of prayer.  This relationship with God is the deepest connection we could ever have and acts as a reflection of ourselves.  When we can see God in ourselves, then we see the divinity of all of humankind.  We allow self acceptance to be our guide, and become the authentic person we are intended to be.

    ASK FOR HELP

My definition of a true friend is someone who I can call in the middle of the night (and not get yelled at) no matter what.  I suppose any of us could do it in an emergency but this is not what I am talking about.  Reaching out and asking for what we need, without judgment from ourselves or them, can be a scary thing.  Fear of rejection, looking foolish, or pride are all reasons why we don’t freely and comfortably ask for help.  Friends, especially girl friends, throughout the years have taught me to trust and be able to count on others when I really needed someone or something.  They will “be there” for you, even when you don’t know exactly what you need.

    LAUGH-A-LOT

Who better than sisters to let your hair down and laugh out loud?  Menopause the Musical proves this over and over, as countless sisters have united and “busted a gut” together.  Along with the laughing, come the crying and a deep sense of connectedness where you can really be you, with all of your faults and flaws, and know there is a bond that cannot be broken.  It is a feeling of home.  Sisters carry the blueprint of the past… the memories… the scars, and yet still can be the greatest pool for generating laughs.

So I honor all of the women who have shaped my life and have given me a template on how to have a successful and happy life.  In loving deeply, knowing God, being dedicated, asking for help and laughing a lot, these are the secrets which I hold dear.

Hypnosis Helps Create Family Togetherness and Growth

Did you know that a fun and easy activity for a family to do to help create unity is hypnosis?  We often find that we are overly busy and do not have enough time to do things together.  Children have sports, parents work long hours, sometimes we can't even eat on the same schedule.  Often we can end up feeling disconnected from one another because of all the separate activities and time schedules.

A family can take a few minutes every week to practice a simple hypnosis exercise together.  This exercise can help you stay connected even when you are not together or when you are all extra busy.  It makes no difference if the children in the family are young or older.  Everyone can participate and you can take as little as 10 minutes a week to do this.  When a famiily chooses a vision of who they want to be, you can create that no matter how many activities and different paths each member takes.

    Here is what you do:

    1. The first time you must decide upon a word or two that really says what you want for your family.  These words are words that describe what you all want your family to be.  For example, you may agree that, "to us we choose for our family to be respectful and kind to each other."  It does not matter if this is already how you are or how you want yourselves to be.  What you choose is the vision you now choose to create.
    2. Next, choose a place, even if it is not somewhere you have ever been, that can represent the phrase you chose on how you want your family to be.  For example, "we choose to picture us all together at a beautiful lake at sunset", or "we picture ourselves in our backyard catching fireflies"...whatever you want is just fine.
    3. Then everyone closes their eyes and holds hands.
    4. Have one member of the family count slowly out loud from 10 to 1.
    5. Have the same person state the word or phrase you all selected to describe what you want as a family (such as  "we choose for our family to be...whatever you decide here").
    6. The same person says, "now everyone remain silent and imagine that you see us all together at the (insert whatever place you chose)."
    7. Everyone remains silent, eyes closed for a few minutes.  then the same person who has led the exercise says, "now we will count back from 5 to 1 and each number will make us fully alert and bring us closer to our choice of what we want our family to be."
    8. Then the same person counts from 5 to 1 and says, "open your eyes."
    9. Do this every week at least once.  If you can do it twice, even better.

Give it a try.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if your family can grow closer and stay connected?

Have you ever been stuck in a dilemma? Ever been depressed? Ever found yourself in a situation not knowing how to escape???   Look to EMOTIONS and especially the subconscious emotions to lead you out.  Conditioning from parents, society, and peers that occur in our childhood sets the pattern in our subconscious mind and nervous system.

This “blueprint” lays the foundation for our personality, our quirks, our beliefs, and our attitudes.

Depending upon how we were taught, the attitudes of our parents, and OUR perceptions (right or wrong, good or bad, true or made up), this is how we will act or re-act in any situation.  When we find ourselves sabotaging the very thing we want in our lives, again look to these stuck emotions in our cellular memory that hold the key.

Let me share this story that proves the point. A patient, Barbara, felt depressed and had a nagging habit of picking her cuticles, and wanted relief from both. Using muscle testing (kinesiology) and the NeuroEmotional Technique (NET), we uncovered what emotions were the culprit to each of these conditions.  Fear, paralyzed will, and abandonment were the subconscious emotions that were locked into her body because of an incident she experienced at six years old.

She was the daughter of a young mother who felt she had no choice but to take her sick child to work and leave her in the car for the day.  At first, Barbara entertained herself well, but as the day went on she didn’t know what to do especially when she had to go to the bathroom.  She began picking her scabbed knee for a distraction. (Now she picks at her fingers.)  She was alone, frightened, and incapable of handling this traumatic situation.

Once we cleared and removed these stuck emotions from her cellular memory, the depression lifted and the constant irritating habit stopped.  The subconscious mind is very powerful and holds memories, patterns, and traumatic events, often unaware to US, in our conscious lives.

There are several ways to unlock these stuck emotions from the subconscious mind, such as:  psychotherapy, massage therapy, talking to spiritual leaders, and NET.

The key is being aware that the subconscious mind can “protect” us from traumatic events by giving us clues in the form of unwanted behaviors, sabotaging events, negative beliefs, rigid thought patterns, and exaggerated responses.

Emotions themselves are not “negative”; they are actually a collection of neuropeptides that attach to a receptor and stimulate an electrical charge on a neuron.

Candice Pert in her incredible discoveries in the 70’s brought this revolutionary information to us.  She also found these “neuropeptides”, once thought to be only found in the brain, all over the body in places such as: the gut, the spine, the immune system, and in fact most cells in the human body. In her book, “Molecules of Emotions” (an older book now, but still the foundation for our understanding of emotions), she describes in detail the connection between our physical body and emotions.

Dr. Bruce Lipton, in his book, “The biology of Belief” says our very genes and DNA are controlled by our thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes. Can you see just how important emotions are to EVERYTHING?  Being aware of how we feel is the first step, and the second is recognizing that we may require help to release these stuck emotions. When we continue to grow we create vibrant health on all levels: mind, body and spirit.
